Garden Volunteers

Lowther Castle Volunteers

One of the major factors in Lowther Castle’s rehabilitation over the past decade has been the input of volunteers, particularly in the gardens. They have helped to recover the Rock Garden from weeds, clear the Countess Garden of spruce trees, plant hundreds of thousands of bulbs and shrubs.

By joining us at Lowther, you will have the opportunity to learn in-depth horticultural skills, meet new people, work alongside experts and become part of a successful family-run business. Annual events include a volunteers’ picnic and Christmas lunch. All volunteers sign a volunteer agreement and free uniform is also given.

All volunteers receive the following:

  • Free annual pass into the Castle & Gardens after 3 months’ volunteering
  • 50% discount into Castle & Garden entry for family (up to 5 members) if accompanied by volunteer.
  • 50% discount in the café (includes family up to 5 members when eating as a group with volunteer).
  • 10% discount off shop items (excluding alcohol).

I started volunteering at Lowther Castle in 2013. I have really enjoyed the varied work we have done. We have helped with most of the major tasks that have been undertaken. The major ones being the Parterre, Garden in the ruins, the Orchard and the Rose Garden. We also help with general work on maintaining paths etc. We also love working in the rock garden which we hope is due for refurbishment. I would definitely recommend that you will be very welcome to come and join us. Lesley McLaughlin

I have been volunteering at Lowther for 8 years and it has proved a hugely enjoyable and rewarding experience. Looking back at how far the garden has come in those years and thinking I have helped with that work brings a great sense of achievement. Not only that, it is has been fun! Working with the other volunteers and the professional gardening team is always stimulating and the ‘craic’ regularly brings a smile to my face. I also know that I have learnt a great deal from my volunteering at Lowther and would highly recommend the experience to others, whatever your age. Mike Walsh

I have been volunteering with the Gardening Team at Lowther since July 2019 and can honestly say I have enjoyed every moment of it. I feel privileged to have made a contribution to this very ambitious but exciting project. Highlights have been planting roses in the new Rose Garden, tranquil moments potting plants in the poly tunnel, picking apples to be made into juice, sniffing winter-flowering Witch Hazel and being an event marshal at the Halloween Event, which gave me the opportunity to witness actors spooking children and adults whilst helping the visitors around the site. The Lowther Team are friendly, helpful and welcoming. I always feel appreciated. Volunteering here has been one of the best decisions of my life. Helen Robson

I have been a regular volunteer at Lowther Castle since 2015 and I enjoy playing a small role in such an amazing project. Every Tuesday, my time is spent helping the marketing and events team in the office. The work is always interesting and varied and I get to see behind the scenes of the work being done to promote the enjoyment of visitors. My work includes researching and recording information, collating marketing materials, drafting notices and talking to people on the phone. I look forward to my time at Lowther and I have met some lovely people and learned a lot through the work I do. Volunteering at Lowther Castle is so rewarding and always enjoyable. Chris Askew
