Role Overview
Lowther Castle & Gardens is recruiting friendly, reliable and enthusiastic short-term contract staff to support Lights of Lowther, our festive Christmas light trail through the castle ruin & gardens. These roles will help deliver a safe, welcoming and memorable evening experience for visitors of all ages.
Contract Details
- Contract type: Short-term seasonal contract
- Event: Lights of Lowther evening event
- Location: Lowther Castle & Gardens, Lowther, Penrith
- Working pattern: Mostly evening shifts, including Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and additional dates in the run-up to Christmas and between Christmas and New Year
- Hours: Up to 18 hours per week
- Example of shift: 3.30pm – 9.30pm
- Start date: 10th November
- End date: 30th December 2026
Key Responsibilities
- Welcome visitors warmly and provide clear, helpful information on arrival and throughout the trail.
- Assist in the car park, helping to direct cars to the correct car parking areas.
- Support ticket scanning, queue management and timed entry flow where required.
- Assist visitors with directions around the castle, gardens, facilities, food and drink areas, and exit routes.
- Help monitor the light trail and visitor areas to support a safe and enjoyable experience.
- Report hazards, incidents, maintenance issues or visitor concerns promptly to the duty manager or supervisor.
- Support crowd movement and encourage visitors to follow event guidance, especially in darker or busier areas.
- Provide practical assistance during adverse weather, busy periods or operational changes.
- Work cooperatively with colleagues across visitor welcome, catering, retail, parking, security and event operations.
- Help maintain a clean, tidy and professional event environment.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties needed to support successful delivery of the event.
About You
- Friendly, approachable and confident speaking with members of the public.
- Reliable, punctual and able to work agreed shifts, including evenings and weekends.
- Calm and practical under pressure, with a positive attitude during busy periods.
- Able to follow instructions, procedures and health and safety guidance.
- Comfortable working outdoors in winter conditions and after dark.
- A good team player who is willing to help wherever needed.
- Previous experience in visitor attractions, events, hospitality, stewarding or customer service is helpful but not essential.
Essential Requirements
- Availability to work evening shifts during the event period.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during shifts.
- Ability to work outdoors in Winter weather conditions when required.
- A commitment to excellent customer service and visitor safety.
- Right to work in the UK.
